Vera had unexpectedly met a handsome young man in the third year of her marriage. He had big brown eyes, a luxuriant beard and when he laughed, which was often, such wonderful teeth to show. Vera was completely captivated! The temptation to leave the lonely Schloss was great, the Count was a tetchy man, given to waving his arm in the air when he was annoyed which was often. Vera, used to the gentler approach of her beloved parents, John and Rose, was both lonely and unhappy in her married life. Sebastian and she had met by pure chance; she had been having coffee at the local hotel, sitting outside on the terrace with little Marianne on her lap.A large car drew up in the car park below - and out stepped Sebastian and that was it! A coup de foudre! After some weeks of hurried and secret meetings, Sebastian begged her to leave her husband and make a new life with him. "You must bring a "dowry" with you" he urgently insisted, "We will need money for our new life together" Vera did as he told her, picking valuable items from here and there, making sure that their disappearance would not be immediately noticed. The prize of the haul was the crown, and this she left until last. As she lifted it up, she suddenly felt very afraid of the drastic step that she was about to take. On that last evening she and Sebastian were in the lower part of the castle, in the housekeeper's room, packing the precious objects, the housekeeper's son was there in his cot and Vera, to cover her movements, had offered to keep an eye on the child whilst his mother enjoyed her night off. Little Marianne was fretful that evening, sensing that something was wrong.
