Edith eyed Leticia's gold jewellery with some avarice. "I have heard gossip in the village - it is almost impossible NOT to hear such things - and I rather gather that you are the hapless victim of a Most Unfortunate Incident." Leticia scowled. She didn't want the scandal of her husband's sudden defection known to all these old biddies. She bit her lip. How could she relate the recent events and make herself not look like the abandoned wife? "I'm very tired" she said brusquely "I think that I will retire to my room with a cup of hot chocolate, if you please" Edith was dumbstruck! Who did Leticia think she was? The skivvy? "You'll have to find Mrs Buttonface to make it for you. "She drew herself up to her full three and a half inches, "You understand? I am the PROPRIETRESS of this exclusive home for retired gentlewomen" Oh dear, a most inauspicious start to Leticia's new place in life.
